Meet the AI tutor at Khan Academy.

The remarkable capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) to effortlessly generate original, human-like text in mere seconds often evoke a mixture of awe, fear, or a combination of both. However, the very attributes that make AI so astonishing, like its potential for facilitating cheating in educational settings and its occasional comical inaccuracies in response to straightforward queries, have led some scholars to curtail its usage in schools, or even impose outright bans on AI programs like ChatGPT.

In the academic year of 2019, more than 8,000 educators and students ventured into uncharted territory by integrating Khan Academy’s AI tutor into their classrooms.Khanmigo, an interactive AI instructor, took center stage in an experimental outing. One of Khanmigo’s distinguishing qualities is its capacity to offer pupils with specialized assistance in a variety of areas, from mathematical and physical subjects to the humanities.

Khan Academy

Khanmigo’s genesis can be traced back to March when it was initially introduced to a smaller cohort of roughly 800 educators and students and Cleopatra to fictional characters like Hamlet and Winnie the Pooh.

In conversations with Kristen DiCerbo, Chief Learning Officer at Khan Academy, she elaborates on the pivotal role Khanmigo plays in addressing a real challenge she observed firsthand while observing an Arizona classroom. Children often require individualized attention, a level of support that often surpasses what a single educator can provide. Through Khanmigo, this gap is bridged, and students receive real-time feedback tailored to their specific needs.

DiCerbo discussed the interactive features offered by the AI at a Khanmigo tech presentation for CNN, highlighting how people may evaluate the AI’s replies in real time and provide input to help it make any necessary corrections.

The AI figures populating the world of Khanmigo are programmed to avoid commenting on events that transpired after their lifetimes. As a result, when confronted with questions regarding the accuracy of AI-Einstein’s portrayal in Christopher Nolan’s film “Oppenheimer,” the AI politely declined to engage.

While AI-Einstein’s fame is widespread, not all figures share the same level of recognition. Khanmigo’s AI representation of Thomas Jefferson confronts these complexities head-on, acknowledging the contradictions in his views on slavery.

Tools like Khanmigo’s main goal is to promote conversational involvement by providing a more immersive learning environment than passive learning techniques like reading Wikipedia pages.

Khan Academy’s journey has extended to embrace GPT-4, OpenAI’s latest and most potent large language model. Leveraging GPT-4, Khan Academy integrated its own learning content and implemented safeguards to maintain an encouraging tone and prevent the disclosure of direct answers, fostering a deeper learning experience.

Khanmigo’s emergence has sparked divergent reactions within academia. While some educators enthusiastically embrace generative AI, others express reservations.

One reason for this divide may be attributed to the lack of comprehensive AI education for educators. According to an EdWeek Research Center survey, 87% of educators have received no professional instruction on incorporating AI into their teaching methods. Khan Academy’s collaboration with Code.org, ETS, and the International Society for Technology in Education on an AI literacy course for teachers aims to bridge this gap.

While still in its pilot phase, Khanmigo has already garnered over 10,000 users beyond the initial pilot program. This readiness to accept the powered by AI teaching assistant shows a readiness to explore and gain knowledge from the technology’s potential.

However, Khanmigo, like other AI models, is not immune to imperfections. Professor Ernest Davis of NYU, a recognized expert in computer science, draws attention to the issue of “hallucinations,” whereby the AI fabricates facts. The need for further development in this field of AI technology is emphasized by Davis.

For instance, in a math and science activity, Khanmigo repeatedly corrected an incorrect division answer before ultimately providing the right response. Similar to this, a multiplication mistake in a separate task illustrated the AI’s mathematical limits.

The specialist information required for precise computation using mathematics is absent from these sentence-word prediction models.

Despite these difficulties, Khanmigo’s promise is still clear. Khanmigo is still a work in advancement, according to DiCerbo, who is willing to make changes and take advice from its beta testers.

In order to ensure that modern technology enhances learning rather than takes its place of it, he suggests imaginative tasks that enable learners to critically analyze AI-generated solutions.

Ramakrishnan emphasizes how AI effectively predicts the following word in a series, cautioning people to approach information generated by Intelligence with some misunderstanding.

As Khan Academy pioneers AI integration through Khanmigo, the delicate balance between human guidance and AI assistance is paramount. insightful teaching methods and responsible AI use have the potential to create an orderly future where technology enriches education without displacing the crucial function of teachers.
