Lionel Richie has been in the music business for a long time, he was born in 1949 in Tuskegee, Alabama, and graduated from college with a B.S. in economics while practicing music since he was very young.
After making bands, in 1968 he joined the most successful group in his career, the legendary Commodores where he took over as lead singer, pianist and saxophone player.
With the Commodores they changed labels from Atlantic to Motown records where they rose to fame with the classics “Brick House“, “Machine Gun”, “Easy”, and “Three times a lady.”
As it happens where there are talented musicians in a band, Richie started writing songs for other musicians; he wrote “Lady” for Kenny Rogers, which reached a number one hit at the beginning of the 80s. After that success, he wrote the song “Endless Love” as a soundtrack for the movie, a song that in duette with Diana Ross would earn an academy award nomination.
Once he became known as an independent musician, that paved the way for him to leave the group and begin a solo career.
His debut album sold over four million copies, and throughout the 1980’s he reached musical success.
In 1985 he wrote and performed the song “Say You, Say Me” for the “White Nights” soundtrack, a song that earned him his first Oscar statue for Best Original Song.
Lionel Richie has won four Grammy awards including Album of the year, Song of the year, Producer of the year and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
In 2019, Richie joined the judges of “American Idol where he made $10 million dollars in his first season of judging in the popular show.
After all of the success, Lionel Richie’s net worth is valued in $200 million dollars.
