Shocked neighbours told how they heard a 33-year-old man fighting with Denise seconds before gunshots sounded out. Police rushed to the scene where they found the two bodies lying on the floor of the living room, reports the Irish Star.
Police said there was a gun beside the man’s body which indicated that he shot Denise first, before taking his own life. The bodies were removed by the Medical Examiner’s Office for post-mortem examinations.
Now, Denise's family, including her two sisters, have confirmed that they will be traveling to New York in the coming days in the wake of their sibling's tragic death. It is understood Denise moved to New York around 2018 and built her life there, working in The Cottage Bar Restaurant, the oldest-run Irish Pub in Forest Hills, Queens.
Heartfelt tributes have flooded in for Denise on social media. Marisha M Autar wrote: "Denise, you will always be remembered as a kind and very pleasant person. We will miss your sweet smile." Victor Gonzalez seconded: "Love you to the moon and back. So sorry." Christine McCarthy added: "Heartbreaking for her family, friends, and work colleagues. My condolences to all. Such a beautiful young woman."
A NYPD spokesperson said: "On Saturday, October 21, at 0244 hours, police responded to a 911 call of shots fired/persons shot [inside a home]. Upon arrival, officers observed a male and female unconscious and unresponsive with sustained gunshot wounds to their respective heads, within the second-floor living room area of the residence.
"EMS responded to the location and pronounced the 39-year-old female and the 33-year-old male deceased at the scene. A firearm was recovered in the vicinity of the deceased male. The investigation remains ongoing."
